In the Forest of Villefère was first published in Weird Tales in August 1925. The four-page story follows de Montour through a supposedly haunted forest, where he meets an unusual traveling companion. Howard received $8 for it; that payment is recorded in a letter to Tevis Clyde Smith from about February 1929 (letter #101).

In a letter to Smith dated October 9, 1925 (letter #33), Howard reported that editor Farnsworth Wright said the story had gone over well with readers and added that he personally thought it “a gem.”
