Introduction

The second volume in a four-part series collecting the boxing fiction of Robert E. Howard. This 378-page edition features stories, fragments, and essays presented in restored and corrected form, based on Howard’s original typescripts, manuscripts, and carbons whenever possible. Most materials were sourced from the Glenn Lord collection (now at the University of Texas at Austin), the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University, and the Cross Plains Library archive.

This Ultimate Edition includes does not contain many changes from the first edition, but text source for the untitled fragment (”It was the end of the . . .”) was switched from Glenn Lord retype to original typescript.

The introduction is by Mark Finn, with cover art by Mark Wheatley.

The text source used for all of the Howard stories, poems and portions thereof contained in Fists of Iron, Volume 2, are Howard’s original typescripts, manuscripts and carbons, when possible. Virtually all of the typescripts were scanned from the Glenn Lord collection, now at the University of Texas, Austin; the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University; or the typescript collection at Cross Plains Library.
The exceptions are: Pit of the Serpent, 1st publication from Fight Stories; The Bulldog Breed, 1st publication from Fight Stories; Sailor’s Grudge, 1st publication from Fight Stories; Winner Take All, 1st publication from Fight Stories; Waterfront Fists, 1st publication from Fight Stories; The Champion of the Forecastle, 1st publication from Fight Stories; Alleys of Peril, 1st publication from Fight Stories; Waterfront Law, 1st publication from Action Stories; Texas Fists, 1st publication from Fight Stories; The Fightin’est Pair, 1st publication from Action Stories; Blue River Blues, mostly from original typescript, last couple pages from Glenn Lord retype.
