Howard wrote “Dermod’s Bane” and submitted it to Ghost Stories in 1929; the magazine rejected it. The manuscript then disappeared until Glenn Lord found it in a trunk of Howard manuscripts in 1964. It was first published in Magazine of Horror #17 in 1967.

The story draws on Irish folklore, family history, grief and supernatural encounters.
