Featuring Turlogh Dubh O’Brien. Howard first wrote the story as the straight historical Spears of Clontarf. After that version was rejected by the Clayton magazines, he substantially rewrote it, added a stronger weird element and retitled it The Grey God Passes. Farnsworth Wright rejected the revised story for Weird Tales in December 1931, objecting that the plot was slight and the weird element insufficiently strong.

Howard later reused some of the same material in the contemporary horror story The Cairn on the Headland. The Grey God Passes has also been published under the working title The Twilight of the Grey Gods.

A 36-page manuscript with editorial markings, together with the Weird Tales rejection letter and a Glenn Lord provenance letter, was sold at auction on February 21, 2006, for $7,767.50.
