The Altar and the Scorpion was written in 1928 and was not published during Howard’s lifetime. Farnsworth Wright rejected it for Weird Tales. It first appeared in the Lancer volume King Kull in 1967, edited by L. Sprague de Camp.

Kull does not appear directly in the story, but he is mentioned as “Kull, king of all Valusia.”
