The Black Stranger is a Conan story written in the 1930s but not published during Howard’s lifetime. After failing to sell it, Howard rewrote the story as the Terence Vulmea pirate tale Swords of the Red Brotherhood, which likewise remained unpublished in his lifetime.

L. Sprague de Camp later reworked the Conan version as The Treasure of Tranicos; for its appearance in Fantasy Magazine #1, that version was further abridged and revised by de Camp and Lester del Rey.
