People of the Serpent is a Steve Harrison detective story in which Harrison pursues Woon Shang into a dangerous swamp.

Howard's agent, Otis Adelbert Kline, received the story on October 23, 1933. It was published in the February 1934 issue of Strange Detective Stories under the title Fangs of Gold. The issue also contained Howard's The Tomb's Secret, and the surviving Kline records indicate that the two publication titles were inadvertently switched: “The Tomb's Secret” was written above “The Teeth of Doom,” while “Fangs of Gold” was written above “The People of the Serpent.”

The story sold for $100; after the Kline Agency's commission, Howard received $85.
