“Golden Hope” Christmas was written while Howard attended Brownwood High School and was published in the December 22, 1922 issue of The Tattler, the school newspaper. A handwritten draft also survives; it ends at the close of chapter 1 and differs only slightly from the published text in the surviving portion.
