Mountain Man is a Breckinridge Elkins story in which Breckinridge rides to Tomahawk to collect a letter for his father and becomes entangled in a chain of mistaken identities and brawls.

Howard's agent, Otis Adelbert Kline, received the story on July 1, 1933. It was first published in Action Stories, March–April 1934. The Kline Agency sold it for $55, of which Howard received $46.75. Howard later revised the story slightly for use as Chapter 2 of A Gent From Bear Creek.
