Opening lines

The sea, the sea, the rolling sea!High flung, wide swinging, so wild and free,The leaping waves with their white-capped crestThat plunge and lunge on the Ocean’s breast

First publication: bibliographic note

The Baylor United Statement, 1923: exact issue/date unknown. The Baylor appearance is retained in the publication history.

Publication evidence. In his letter to Tevis Clyde Smith dated June 22, 1923, Howard reported that the assistant editor of The Campus at Southern Methodist University had seen “The Sea” in The Baylor United Statement. This establishes the Baylor appearance before that letter, but does not identify the issue or its exact date.

Research history. HowardWorks’ May 19, 1923 identification was tentative: its notes attribute that possibility to UMHB staff and report Patrice Louinet’s suggestion that the appearance might have been later. Rob Roehm, in “Footnotes #2” (November 1, 2018), subsequently examined surviving digital issues and reported that neither March 31 nor May 19, 1923 contains a Howard poem. REH World’s independent examination of the complete 12-page May 19, 1923 issue likewise found no “The Sea” or other Howard contribution.

Editorial conclusion. The Baylor appearance remains recorded, but the exact issue/date is unknown. May 19, 1923 must not be treated as its publication date; no replacement date is assigned.
