In memory of an old friend, Robert E. Howard, fantasy fiction writer of the 1930s, author of the Conan stories. Bob enjoyed the old witch and ghost stories my gran[d]mother used to tell. He encouraged me to write them in the form of a novel and gave me a short outline for the story.
