Letter to Tevis Clyde Smith

Extract

The picnic has come and went. It was bum. Bum Ferris-wheel, no merry-go-round, bum side shows, bum rodeo, bum everything. Yet—it took six thousand dollars out of the country. (I guess the carnival girls took most of it.) Everybody was drunk and I saw one fine fight and several minor scraps. Ho, hum. Glad it’s over with.
