J. H. Carpenter was a Callahan County, Texas public official who served as county judge during the administration of Robert E. Howard’s estate after Howard’s death in 1936. Isaac M. Howard repeatedly described Carpenter as protective of the estate, insistent on proper contracts, and determined that estate papers be returned. Contemporary Callahan County records identify J. H. Carpenter as county judge in 1935–1936; he had earlier served as a county commissioner.
