        REH Writings
        guide & credits

        A searchable research catalogue of Robert E. Howard’s writings and the people, animals, vessels and other story entities found in them—built for REH readers and fans as well as editors and scholars.

        START HEREWhat REH Writings is

        The REH Writings plugin brings together permanent identities for Howard’s prose Works and Poetry, their distinct textual states, correspondence to and from Howard, title and name forms, dates, manuscript witnesses, publication appearances and Characters.

        It is a catalogue and research guide rather than a claim that every record is finished or that every surviving text is reproduced here. Coverage grows as reliable sources and exact texts are reviewed.

        WORKS & POETRYCompositions and textual states

        A Work is the underlying composition. One Work may survive in several Textual Versions: drafts, submitted or final typescripts, false starts, fragments, synopses, outlines, published versions or later revisions.

        • Search Howard and publication titles, manuscript titles, bylines or pseudonyms, and TSS numbers.
        • Filter by form, genre, written or published year, and recorded income.
        • Open a Work to see its textual family; open one state to inspect its exact Characters, publications and manuscript evidence.
        • The catalogue’s primary/default state is a navigation choice, not an automatic declaration of textual authority.
        LETTERSCorrespondence, dates and participants

        Letters are correspondence documents rather than merely another publication format. The catalogue can include letters from Howard, letters to Howard, and third-party correspondence that substantially mentions Howard.

        • Filter by direction, correspondent and year, or search public extracts, subjects, letter state and TSS references.
        • Exact, circa, uncertain, before/after, date-range and postmark evidence retain their source wording instead of being collapsed to a guessed day.
        • Every distinct surviving draft, unsent or sent text is a Letter of its own; reviewed draft/later relationships remain visible. Edited printed transcriptions and original TSS pages are source evidence rather than extra Letters.
        • A complete transcription or facsimile appears only when permission and an individual user capability both allow it; restricted text is never included in public search or page HTML.
        CHARACTERSPeople, animals, vessels and names

        “Character” is the catalogue’s broad story-entity term. It includes humans, historical people, animals, ships and vessels, supernatural beings and other identifiable entities.

        • Search canonical names, aliases, nicknames, spellings and draft-specific name forms.
        • Combine Kind, Historicity, Species / type and Role / occupation filters, then limit “Found in” to Works, Poetry or Letters.
        • Appearances are tied to exact Textual Versions or correspondence roles, so a Character found in one draft or letter is not silently asserted to occur elsewhere.
        • The same name never proves the same identity. Howard reused names, while one developing Character may also change name between drafts.

        Appearance totals report the evidence currently reviewed; they are not always an exhaustive census of every surviving state.

        MANUSCRIPTSTypescripts and TSS numbers

        A TSS number is a catalogue reference for a physical manuscript or typescript unit. It is not a Work ID, a Textual Version ID or necessarily a draft number. Several TSS units may belong to one surviving textual witness.

        • You can enter a TSS number in Writings search to find its catalogued Work and state.
        • Exact manuscript features—such as strikeouts, insertions, page order, authorial corrections, bylines and wording changes—are recorded only when the available evidence supports them.
        • First Cuts or direct manuscript/typescript evidence can support page-level detail. An overview catalogue or spreadsheet may establish that a unit exists without proving everything written on its pages.
        SOURCESWhere the information comes from

        The catalogue began with earlier REH World Stories records and Howard Works (howardworks.com) bibliographic evidence, then reconciled those records into stable Work and Textual Version identities. Publication records and Contents are supplied through the companion REH Publications catalogue.

        Textual and Character research is expanded from reviewed source material, including:

        • Howard’s surviving manuscripts, typescripts and carbons, together with documented TSS catalogue evidence;
        • REH Foundation Press First Cuts volumes, which preserve draft and manuscript detail;
        • REH Foundation Press Ultimate Editions, used as restored reading-edition witnesses for the practical final/final-submission state;
        • original magazine, pulp and other publication texts when publication evidence is the available textual source;
        • source notes, bibliographies and other reviewed research used to reconcile titles, dates, relationships and surviving states.

        Source data is treated as evidence to be reviewed and reconciled, not as something to copy blindly. Documented manuscript holdings represented in these sources include material associated with the Glenn Lord collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University and the typescript collection at Cross Plains Library. A catalogue entry does not imply that every physical page has been directly inspected.

        CREDITS & ACKNOWLEDGMENTSProject and research foundations

        REH Writings is created and maintained by Ståle Gismervik for reh.world. The catalogue is built on decades of bibliographic, textual, archival and editorial work by the Robert E. Howard research community.

        Major source foundations currently represented include:

        • Howard Works (howardworks.com), an important bibliographic foundation for title and publication evidence;
        • the Robert E. Howard Foundation and REH Foundation Press, including First Cuts and Ultimate Editions used in exact-text research;
        • the three supplied second-edition volumes of The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard used for the present correspondence catalogue;
        • surviving manuscript, typescript and TSS evidence represented by material associated with the Glenn Lord collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University and the typescript collection at Cross Plains Library;
        • original magazines, books and other primary publication witnesses;
        • the companion REH Publications catalogue on reh.world for publication records and Contents relationships.

        Individual records retain source and provenance where available. Researchers, editors, collectors and readers can be credited at the relevant source or record level when a specific contribution is known, rather than forcing every contribution into one undifferentiated master list.

        SEARCHINGUseful ways to explore
        • Try a familiar published title even when Howard used another title; reviewed title forms remain searchable.
        • Search a pseudonym or credited byline such as a publication-supplied name.
        • Search a TSS number without needing to know its Work, poem or letter title.
        • Use correspondent shortcuts for Tevis Clyde Smith, H. P. Lovecraft, Novalyne Price and other frequently represented people.
        • Combine filters: for example, a genre and year under Works, From REH plus a correspondent under Letters, or Historical person + Letters only under Characters.
        • Open result cards for the full evidence. Compact cards deliberately summarize rather than reproduce the complete record.
        INTERPRETATIONHow evidence is treated
        • No one source is automatically best for every question. A Howard typescript may be strongest for authorial wording; a pulp proves what readers received; a restored edition may best represent the normalized final reading text.
        • Missing pages or an incomplete source cannot prove that a Character or passage was absent from the missing material.
        • A publication relationship applies to the whole Work unless the evidence identifies one exact Textual Version.
        • Stable identities are corrected conservatively: evidence is preserved, same-title and same-name records are not merged by guesswork, and uncertain points remain identified as uncertain.
        DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

        REH Writings
        changelog

        A running record of public catalogue, editorial, research and migration changes. The newest release is shown first.

        0.80.3-alphaRelease notesCURRENT
        • Add Review & authority → Letter image review, a generic retained rehw-correspondence-media-review/v1 workflow. Import stages attachment references and prepared target/role/caption/alt recommendations only; it copies no image binary, grants no rights and performs no permanent Letter write.
        • Add schema 3.10.0 with correspondence_media_imports and correspondence_media_reviews. Every row retains its exact Letter/source/attachment snapshot, human decision, item-specific public-display basis and eventual permanent media ID.
        • Provide a consolidated review path: an editor may approve every remaining prepared row only after choosing permission_confirmed, public_domain or licensed; exceptional rows remain editable image by image. The plugin never chooses that rights basis.
        • Apply approved images only after APPLY REVIEWED LETTER MEDIA. The writer revalidates every snapshot and active-image collision before opening one transaction, then inserts all rights/media rows or none. Deferred/excluded rows write nothing; already-active links are preserved without duplication.
        • The prepared legacy package contains 51 occurrences / 50 attachments: 49 new review rows, one known wrong Standard Magazines featured-image occurrence excluded, and one existing Letter-media link preserved. The Torbett image is targeted only to the explicit Torbett-to-REH Letter.
        • Applied packages display immutable provenance and do not rerun pre-apply self-collision checks. No old correspondence, extract/entity or media package runs on installation.
        0.80.2-alphaRelease notes
        • Add a live, read-only Old letter & postcard image inventory to Letter catalogue. It resolves the 30 retained legacy source mappings across their unique /letters/ URLs and inventories featured, embedded, block/gallery and page-attached image references without copying files or writing permanent catalogue data.
        • Export exact legacy page → Letter/source-state targets, WordPress attachment IDs, URLs, dimensions, captions, alt text, discovery path, existing Letter-media links and guarded metadata fingerprints. The page body, excerpt and attachment descriptions are represented only by length/hash and are not exported as possible complete Letter text.
        • Keep target identity and rights independent: multi-Letter legacy pages are explicitly review-required, no role is inferred from image order/title/filename, and every candidate remains rights_review_required with public display unauthorized until an editor supplies an approved item-specific basis through the existing Letter editor.
        • Repair the Documentation status cards so their label, value and explanation stack normally instead of squeezing into separate flex columns and breaking words vertically.
        • No migration runs on installation and no schema changes. The already-applied legacy /letters/ package, 368 extracts and 855 Letter/entity relations must not be replayed. Schema remains 3.9.0.
        0.80.1-alphaRelease notes
        • Stops an already-applied generic correspondence package from showing false live-validation errors against the correspondent, Letter identity and source rows created by its own successful transaction. Applied packages now render directly as retained provenance.
        • Restores the completed Collected Letters baseline diagnostic after reviewed generic intake enriches an existing correspondent with a permanent Character link. A baseline correspondent that originally had no Character link may acquire one later without being treated as corruption; explicit baseline Character IDs remain exact guards.
        • No data migration or package replay is required. Schema remains 3.9.0.
        0.80.0-alphaRelease notes
        • Extend the established Correspondence Intake into a generic reviewed metadata-package workflow for incoming, outgoing and third-party correspondence. Upload is non-mutating; correspondent and Letter identity decisions are saved separately; one guarded APPLY CORRESPONDENCE INTAKE transaction creates/reuses permanent correspondents and Letters, participants, dates, source states and validated Writings-side Publication relationships. Complete text, public extracts, rights grants and media are forbidden from this package format.
        • Add schema 3.9.0 with retained correspondence_intake_packages and correspondence_intake_reviews provenance tables. New Letter identity creation now has a generic maintained route instead of requiring a source-specific writer.
        • Prepare the first generic migration package from the legacy reh.world/letters/ archive: 31 correspondence items are reviewed as 24 new Letters, 6 explicit existing-Letter enrichments and 1 deferred Clark Ashton Smith Christmas-card identity question; 26 correspondent declarations comprise 14 new and 12 explicit reuses. The 30 non-deferred items carry 36 source records and 6 additional REH Publications relationships. Images/facsimiles and complete text are intentionally not migrated by this metadata package.
        • Correct the fixed Collected Letters Volume 2 source package so 30 affected 1931 display labels retain the full year. Existing installations receive a narrow automatic repair that changes only exact known malformed Letter/date-assertion snapshots and refuses later editor changes. Sort dates were already correct.
        • Keep the 0.79 Letter editor, extract/public-use gates, restricted-reader boundary, Tevis Clyde Smith repair and completed Letter research intact. The live Collected Letters entity sweep through Batch 6 totals 855 applied Letter/entity relations; the 368 reviewed public extracts have also been applied and must not be replayed.
        0.79.0-alphaRelease notes
        • Add Letter catalogue as an everyday admin area for existing permanent correspondence. It edits Letter presentation/state/direction/date/origin, incipit, public summary and short public extract with its independent rights basis/attribution; permanent Letter identity is not minted by this editor.
        • Add controlled complete-transcription maintenance using the existing correspondence_texts + item-specific correspondence_rights model. Complete text is stored restricted and becomes readable only when the rights row is active, its scope covers complete text/transcription and the current user has the named capability. The public page still receives the text only through the authenticated no-store/noindex reader endpoint.
        • Add Writings-side Letter Publication-appearance maintenance and WordPress Media Library facsimile/postcard/envelope linking. REH Publications remains bibliographic authority. Public Letter detail renders only media explicitly marked public with an active facsimile-capable rights row. The everyday form refuses to label an ordinary publicly addressable WordPress attachment as restricted; protected facsimiles require protected storage.
        • Harden the new maintenance boundaries: publication links refuse to write when the REH Publications API cannot validate the target ID; exact source-state selectors are revalidated against the Letter; public media must be a real image attachment with an approved public-display rights basis; retiring the final media row also retires its item-specific rights row. Public Letter search/cards/detail now ignore any extract whose public-use basis is still unreviewed.
        • Give public Letter detail the same administrator Edit this entry shortcut used by Work/Character detail. Add the generic other correspondence direction to public/admin filters for future Dr. Isaac Howard and other related correspondence without forcing those documents into Howard-authored Works.
        • Improve restricted-reader selection so an earlier inactive text/rights row cannot mask a later readable active transcription.
        • Add a deliberate bulk public-extract review control. Bulk extract approval is unavailable until the editor chooses a reviewed public-use basis; that choice and optional attribution are copied to each extract review row before the normal saved-review/apply gates.
        • Prepare the first complete-corpus Collected Letters extract research package: all 373 permanent Letters are declared, 368 have short opening-extract proposals and 5 source states remain intentionally deferred until a facsimile or alternate transcription is available. The package carries no entity proposals and defaults every extract to permission review required.
        • Correct Tevis Clyde Smith's guarded reader-facing profile when it is still in the exact legacy story-centric state: his close friendship and extensive correspondence with Robert E. Howard now take precedence over the incidental mention in *The People of the Black Coast*. Later custom descriptions are never overwritten.
        • No schema change; schema remains 3.8.0.
        0.78.12-alphaRelease notes
        • Require an explicit button click for the two typed Letter-research write gates. Pressing Enter inside the CREATE LETTER RESEARCH CHARACTERS or APPLY LETTER RESEARCH confirmation field is now prevented client-side, while the existing exact phrase, nonce and server-side validation remain mandatory.
        • Add a short inline instruction beside both gates so a successful Character-creation action cannot appear to have happened mysteriously when Section 3 disappears after creating its reviewed identities.
        • Record completed Letter entity research through Batch 3 at 715 applied Letter/entity relations. Those promoted packages remain provenance and must not be replayed.
        • No schema, identity, rights, correspondence-research format or permanent-data mutation on installation. Schema remains 3.8.0.
        0.78.11-alphaRelease notes
        • Clarify the already-completed Collected Letters intake after the guarded letter-state and Letter 369 corrections. The underlying preflight() remains strict and unchanged.
        • Recognize only the exact six known correspondence/date-assertion differences left by the completed letter-state split, and only when both guarded corrections are complete, there are no errors and the package has no new rows. That known final state now displays Live metadata intake complete rather than the misleading Preflight blocked message.
        • Relabel the retained package table as Package comparison · diagnostic only in that exact state. Any unexpected conflict/error/new row immediately falls back to the normal blocked preflight; no import safety is weakened.
        • No schema or permanent catalogue mutation on installation. Schema remains 3.8.0.
        0.78.10-alphaRelease notes
        • Correct the isolated Collected Letters Volume 3, item 369 source-boundary leak. The supplied edition places item 369 on printed pages 454–455 with TSS 23968–23969; Appendix One begins separately on page 457.
        • Update the bundled fresh-install intake from 1,041 to 1,030 Letter-specific TSS evidence rows by removing the eleven Appendix-One TSS rows 70001–70011 from Letter 369. The underlying manuscript units remain active evidence for *The Beast From the Abyss* (Work #324 / Text #1107).
        • Rehome the reviewed *The Beast From the Abyss* correspondence relationship from Letter 369 to Letter 268 as an enclosed_work, matching the volume's explicit enclosure note, and correct Letter 369's Volume 3 publication page label to 454. The total reviewed Letter/Work relationships remains 24.
        • Add a snapshot-guarded Correct Letter 369 source boundary action to the existing Collected Letters intake screen for sites that already ran the earlier package. It requires CORRECT LETTER 369 SOURCE, writes transactionally, retires only the eleven false Letter/TSS links, and refuses changed/unexpected live state.
        • No Letter count, Character, Work/Textual Version identity, manuscript witness, rights or schema change. Schema remains 3.8.0.
