        START HEREWhat REH Writings is

        The REH Writings plugin brings together permanent identities for Howard’s prose Works and Poetry, their distinct textual states, correspondence to and from Howard, title and name forms, dates, manuscript witnesses, publication appearances and Characters.

        It is a catalogue and research guide rather than a claim that every record is finished or that every surviving text is reproduced here. Coverage grows as reliable sources and exact texts are reviewed.

        WORKS & POETRYCompositions and textual states

        A Work is the underlying composition. One Work may survive in several Textual Versions: drafts, submitted or final typescripts, false starts, fragments, synopses, outlines, published versions or later revisions.

        • Search Howard and publication titles, manuscript titles, bylines or pseudonyms, and TSS numbers.
        • Filter by form, genre, written or published year, and recorded income.
        • Open a Work to see its textual family; open one state to inspect its exact Characters, publications and manuscript evidence.
        • The catalogue’s primary/default state is a navigation choice, not an automatic declaration of textual authority.
        LETTERSCorrespondence, dates and participants

        Letters are correspondence documents rather than merely another publication format. The catalogue can include letters from Howard, letters to Howard, and third-party correspondence that substantially mentions Howard.

        • Filter by direction, correspondent and year, or search public extracts, subjects, letter state and TSS references.
        • Exact, circa, uncertain, before/after, date-range and postmark evidence retain their source wording instead of being collapsed to a guessed day.
        • Every distinct surviving draft, unsent or sent text is a Letter of its own; reviewed draft/later relationships remain visible. Edited printed transcriptions and original TSS pages are source evidence rather than extra Letters.
        • A complete transcription or facsimile appears only when permission and an individual user capability both allow it; restricted text is never included in public search or page HTML.
        CHARACTERSPeople, animals, vessels and names

        “Character” is the catalogue’s broad story-entity term. It includes humans, historical people, animals, ships and vessels, supernatural beings and other identifiable entities.

        • Search canonical names, aliases, nicknames, spellings and draft-specific name forms. Enable Include contextual mentions when you want broader discovery through descriptions, appearance roles and Letter context.
        • Combine Kind, Historicity, Species / type and Role / occupation filters, then limit “Found in” to Works, Poetry or Letters.
        • Appearances are tied to exact Textual Versions or correspondence roles, so a Character found in one draft or letter is not silently asserted to occur elsewhere.
        • The same name never proves the same identity. Howard reused names, while one developing Character may also change name between drafts.

        Appearance totals report the evidence currently reviewed; they are not always an exhaustive census of every surviving state.

        MANUSCRIPTSTypescripts and TSS numbers

        A TSS number is a catalogue reference for a physical manuscript or typescript unit. It is not a Work ID, a Textual Version ID or necessarily a draft number. Several TSS units may belong to one surviving textual witness.

        • You can enter a TSS number in Writings search to find its catalogued Work and state.
        • Exact manuscript features—such as strikeouts, insertions, page order, authorial corrections, bylines and wording changes—are recorded only when the available evidence supports them.
        • First Cuts or direct manuscript/typescript evidence can support page-level detail. An overview catalogue or spreadsheet may establish that a unit exists without proving everything written on its pages.
        SOURCESWhere the information comes from

        The catalogue began with earlier REH World Stories records and Howard Works (howardworks.com) bibliographic evidence, then reconciled those records into stable Work and Textual Version identities. Publication records and Contents are supplied through the companion REH Publications catalogue.

        Textual and Character research is expanded from reviewed source material, including:

        • Howard’s surviving manuscripts, typescripts and carbons, together with documented TSS catalogue evidence;
        • REH Foundation Press First Cuts volumes, which preserve draft and manuscript detail;
        • REH Foundation Press Ultimate Editions, used as restored reading-edition witnesses for the practical final/final-submission state;
        • original magazine, pulp and other publication texts when publication evidence is the available textual source;
        • source notes, bibliographies and other reviewed research used to reconcile titles, dates, relationships and surviving states.

        Source data is treated as evidence to be reviewed and reconciled, not as something to copy blindly. Documented manuscript holdings represented in these sources include material associated with the Glenn Lord collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University and the typescript collection at Cross Plains Library. A catalogue entry does not imply that every physical page has been directly inspected.

        Correspondence sources represented in the live Letter catalogue

        This list is generated from the retained source provenance, so it grows automatically as reviewed Letter sources are added.

        CREDITS & ACKNOWLEDGMENTSProject and research foundations

        REH Writings is created and maintained by Ståle Gismervik for reh.world. The catalogue is built on decades of bibliographic, textual, archival and editorial work by the Robert E. Howard research community.

        Major source foundations currently represented include:

        • Howard Works (howardworks.com), an important bibliographic foundation for title and publication evidence;
        • the Robert E. Howard Foundation and REH Foundation Press, including First Cuts and Ultimate Editions used in exact-text research;
        • the live Correspondence sources listed above, including The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard and every additional reviewed Letter source currently represented;
        • surviving manuscript, typescript and TSS evidence represented by material associated with the Glenn Lord collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University and the typescript collection at Cross Plains Library;
        • original magazines, books and other primary publication witnesses;
        • the companion REH Publications catalogue on reh.world for publication records and Contents relationships.

        Individual records retain source and provenance where available. Researchers, editors, collectors and readers can be credited at the relevant source or record level when a specific contribution is known, rather than forcing every contribution into one undifferentiated master list.

        SEARCHINGUseful ways to explore
        • Try a familiar published title even when Howard used another title; reviewed title forms remain searchable.
        • Search a pseudonym or credited byline such as a publication-supplied name.
        • Search a TSS number without needing to know its Work, poem or letter title.
        • Character search is forgiving about middle initials and word order: Robert Barlow can find Robert H. Barlow.
        • Use -word to exclude a term: Abdullah -Khan keeps Abdullah matches but removes results matching Khan. Use -"exact phrase" to exclude a phrase.
        • Use quotation marks for a required phrase and +word when a term must be present. Keep structured questions such as Kind, Historicity and Role in the existing filters rather than building a complex Boolean query.
        • Use correspondent shortcuts for Tevis Clyde Smith, H. P. Lovecraft, Novalyne Price and other frequently represented people.
        • Combine filters: for example, a genre and year under Works, From REH plus a correspondent under Letters, or Historical / real + Letters only under Characters.
        • Open result cards for the full evidence. Compact cards deliberately summarize rather than reproduce the complete record.
        INTERPRETATIONHow evidence is treated
        • No one source is automatically best for every question. A Howard typescript may be strongest for authorial wording; a pulp proves what readers received; a restored edition may best represent the normalized final reading text.
        • Missing pages or an incomplete source cannot prove that a Character or passage was absent from the missing material.
        • A publication relationship applies to the whole Work unless the evidence identifies one exact Textual Version.
        • Stable identities are corrected conservatively: evidence is preserved, same-title and same-name records are not merged by guesswork, and uncertain points remain identified as uncertain.
        DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

        REH Writings
        changelog

        A running record of public catalogue, editorial, research and migration changes. The newest release is shown first.

        0.82.9-alphaRelease notesCURRENT
        • Close the Poetry publication-history source-row queue at 2,847 safe Work-level relationships across 280 publications / 702 of 709 poem Works, with 0 held rows. The permanent Poetry corpus itself remains 709 Works / 764 textual states.
        • Resolve *Musings [English]* in *Wolfshead #0* specifically to Musings (1). Reclassify all three “Ho, merry bark, let’s go” occurrences as non-Howard borrowed verse/source-audit exclusions, and retain the four *Candles/Kerzen* appearances as explicit disputed-authorship exclusions rather than creating unsupported Howard Poetry Works.
        • Add the first conservative Poetry manuscript & TSS enrichment helper inside Collected Poetry intake. It stages the reviewed map as the normal reh-writings-manuscript-research v1.1 package and hands control to the existing Manuscripts & TSS Ready/Already/Blocked review plus MIGRATE MANUSCRIPT EVIDENCE gate.
        • Safe TSS pass 1 contains 362 physical witness declarations / 459 TSS catalogue units across 331 poems. It intentionally excludes shared TSS numbers, multi-state poems, later-numbered drafts and irregular page sequences for later authority work.
        • Preserve physical-source distinctions by adding Xerox of Howard typescript and Xerox of Howard manuscript witness kinds. Their generic textual-witness links remain the existing authorial typescript/manuscript classes; no parallel evidence model is introduced.
        • No frontend redesign in this release. Schema remains 3.12.1.
        0.82.8-alphaRelease notes
        • Repaired the first Poetry corpus-structure gaps exposed by publication reconciliation: baseline is now 709 poem Works / 764 textual states.
        • Added six independently addressable embedded verses from *Songs of Bastards*: *An Evening Adventure*, *Let Us Up in the Hills Together*, *Life Is a Lot of Hooey!*, *This Is the Tale of Glory*, *Now Are the Stars Upbraiding*, and *Men Are Toys on a Godling’s String*.
        • Added optional Poetry-package structural memberships and writes the six component poems as embedded_verse members of *Songs of Bastards* using the existing work_memberships table; no schema change.
        • Opened embedded component poems now show Part of → Songs of Bastards in the header metadata.
        • Poetry publication-history pass 7 expands Black Dawn appearances to the five actual UE cycle members instead of inventing a false *Black Dawn* poem Work.
        • Reconciled “Ho, ho, the long light(s) lift amain” as the UE-documented earlier untitled draft of *A Song Out of the East*.
        • Publication bridge now contains 2,846 Work-level relationships across 280 publications / 702 of 709 poem Works; held source rows reduced to 8, with 11 source-noise exclusions preserved separately.
        • Schema remains 3.12.1.
        0.82.7-alphaRelease notes
        • Continue Poetry publication history with safe passes 5–6. Repair legacy Contents rows whose leading page/roman-numeral locator had been mistaken for the poem title, then resolve source-specific old titles and first-line forms only where the UE, reviewed REH Publications layer or publication bibliography supports the Work identity.
        • Add 100 new unique Work-level poem/publication relationships relative to 0.82.6, taking the safe bridge to 2,825 relationships across 279 permanent publications and 696 of 703 imported poem Works. Exact printed Textual Version remains deliberately unasserted.
        • Reduce the formerly held 167-row queue to 19 rows: 14 corpus-structure reviews, 4 authorship reviews, and 1 unresolved legacy title. Examples of corpus review include missing standalone identities and verses embedded inside larger works/cycles; disputed *Candles* rows are kept under authorship review rather than imported.
        • Keep 10 proven non-poem/source-noise rows in a separate audit bucket instead of Poetry. This includes mis-typed prose/artwork entries and non-Howard verse attribution such as Emil Petaja's *Echo from the Ebon Isles*.
        • Improve Review & authority → Poetry publication history so held rows display their research category and reason, while excluded source noise is separately inspectable. Reviewed reconciliation notes are preserved in newly created publication-link evidence.
        • No Poetry frontend redesign in this release; the approved 0.82.5/0.82.6 card hierarchy and handwritten ruled-verse treatment are unchanged.
        • Schema remains 3.12.1.
        0.82.6-alphaRelease notes
        • Continue Poetry publication history with safe pass 4: 122 held source rows are resolved into 107 new unique Work-level relationships after direct review against the supplied Collected Poetry Ultimate Editions and the already-reviewed Poetry identity package.
        • Resolve all 16 previously ambiguous rows without relaxing identity rules: punctuation distinguishes *Man, the Master* from *Man the Master*; quoted first lines distinguish the *Destiny* records; title + first line selects *Futility (1)*; and the UE alternate-title index resolves the formerly ambiguous “For I have watched …” item to *Lost Nisapur*.
        • Add reviewed grouped-state/variant links such as Age → To the Old Men, Hate’s Dawn → A Son of Spartacus, Black Mass/Tower of Zukala draft-vs-published labels to their parent poem Works, plus a guarded set of uniquely identifiable spelling/title and in-poem first-line forms.
        • The safe bridge now contains 2,725 relationships across 264 permanent publications, covering 692 of the 703 poem Works. The held pile falls from 289 to 167 rows, all now unresolved rather than ambiguous. Exact printed Textual Version is still not asserted by this Work-level bridge.
        • Schema remains 3.12.1.
        0.82.5-alphaRelease notes
        • Refine the Poetry catalogue card hierarchy from live review: poem title and ruled opening excerpt now lead; alternate-title forms move below the excerpt; Category / Section follow beneath them; counts and Explore Poem remain in their established positions.
        • Continue Poetry publication history with safe pass 3. Reviewed inverted-article alternate-title forms plus near-exact, uniquely identifying first-line quotations resolve 59 additional held source rows / 57 new unique Work-level relationships. The safe package now contains 2,618 relationships across 258 publications, covering 678 poems; held rows fall from 348 to 289. Exact printed Textual Version is still not asserted.
        • Schema remains 3.12.1.
        0.82.4-alphaRelease notes
        • Simplify public Poetry result cards back into the established Works-style manila folder instead of a literal ivory sheet insert. Restore the fading archival rule beneath the protruding POEM tab so Poetry again shares the same folder construction as Works.
        • Distinguish Poetry through the poem itself rather than through extra chrome: the poem title and opening verse lines now use the existing restrained handwritten-style font stack, while alternate titles, Category, Section, counts and controls remain in the normal catalogue UI typography.
        • Add faint ruled lines beneath each displayed opening verse line, borrowing the quiet paper/stationery language already used by correspondence without turning the card into a postcard or fake manuscript scan. Opened poem titles and Opening lines use the same literary handwriting treatment.
        • Continue Poetry publication history with a second conservative Work-level reconciliation pass. Explicit language/state annotations that reduce to one reviewed poem identity, and legacy rows whose wording uniquely matches one reviewed first line, add 123 safely resolved source rows / 102 new unique poem-publication relationships. The safe package now contains 2,561 relationships across 256 publications, covering 674 poems; held rows fall from 471 to 348.
        • Exact printed Textual Version is still not inferred by this pass. Ambiguous identities and unresolved rows remain held for later authority work. No schema change; schema remains 3.12.1.
        0.82.3-alphaRelease notes
        • Give public Poetry result cards their own archival identity without breaking the established Works family: each poem now appears as a light manila folder containing a slightly inset ivory poem/typescript sheet. The poem title, Section/Category and opening verse sit on the sheet; publication/text-state counts and Explore Poem remain on the folder. This is CSS/HTML only — no fake manuscript image, parchment, quill or decorative artwork.
        • Add Review & authority → Poetry publication history, a conservative bridge from legacy REH World Contents evidence to permanent REH Publications IDs. The bundled reviewed package contains 2,459 safe Work-level publication relationships across 251 publications, covering 669 of the 703 imported poems.
        • Keep 471 source rows held for review rather than guessing: 16 ambiguous identities plus 455 unresolved/version-specific/fragmentary rows. Held rows are visible in the authority screen but are never written by the safe transaction.
        • Publication reconciliation is idempotent and preflighted against both permanent Poetry identities and live REH Publications. Existing appearances are preserved; missing rows are added as relationship_type=work with text_version_id=0, explicitly recording that the exact printed Textual Version is not asserted.
        • No schema change; schema remains 3.12.1.
        0.82.2-alphaRelease notes
        • Bring opened Poetry records into the same visual hierarchy as prose Works: Category now lives in the top-right manila header using the established Genre-style chip treatment, with the Collected Poetry Section below it as secondary catalogue context.
        • Replace the separate dark Poetry metadata strip with the normal two-column Work lead layout: Opening lines on the left and Textual states on the right. Opening verse uses high-contrast readable serif text and preserves line breaks.
        • Repair the 0.82.0→0.82.1 opening-extract backfill edge case. A staged baseline package is now considered stale when it contains fewer opening-extract lines than the bundled reviewed package, even when the number of poem entries is the same.
        • The integrated Poetry intake authority screen now detects missing or stale opening extracts by exact reviewed value and offers Refresh Poetry opening extracts. Refresh retires superseded generated poetry_ue extract facts and inserts the reviewed multi-line version without creating or merging Works.
        • No schema change; schema remains 3.12.1.
