        START HEREWhat REH Writings is

        The REH Writings plugin brings together permanent identities for Howard’s prose Works and Poetry, their distinct textual states, correspondence to and from Howard, title and name forms, dates, manuscript witnesses, publication appearances and Characters.

        It is a catalogue and research guide rather than a claim that every record is finished or that every surviving text is reproduced here. Coverage grows as reliable sources and exact texts are reviewed.

        WORKS & POETRYCompositions and textual states

        A Work is the underlying composition. One Work may survive in several Textual Versions: drafts, submitted or final typescripts, false starts, fragments, synopses, outlines, published versions or later revisions.

        • Search Howard and publication titles, manuscript titles, bylines or pseudonyms, and TSS numbers.
        • Filter by form, genre, written or published year, and recorded income.
        • Open a Work to see its textual family; open one state to inspect its exact Characters, publications and manuscript evidence.
        • The catalogue’s primary/default state is a navigation choice, not an automatic declaration of textual authority.
        • Poetry Character/entity coverage is exact-state exhaustive: all 765 currently catalogued Poetry textual states have an explicit reviewed census, including states with no qualifying entities.
        LETTERSCorrespondence, dates and participants

        Letters are correspondence documents rather than merely another publication format. The catalogue can include letters from Howard, letters to Howard, and third-party correspondence that substantially mentions Howard.

        • Filter by direction, correspondent and year, or search public extracts, subjects, letter state and TSS references.
        • Exact, circa, uncertain, before/after, date-range and postmark evidence retain their source wording instead of being collapsed to a guessed day.
        • Every distinct surviving draft, unsent or sent text is a Letter of its own; reviewed draft/later relationships remain visible. Edited printed transcriptions and original TSS pages are source evidence rather than extra Letters.
        • A complete transcription or facsimile appears only when permission and an individual user capability both allow it; restricted text is never included in public search or page HTML.
        CHARACTERSPeople, animals, vessels and names

        “Character” is the catalogue’s broad story-entity term. It includes humans, historical people, animals, ships and vessels, supernatural beings and other identifiable entities.

        • Search canonical names, aliases, nicknames, spellings and draft-specific name forms. Enable Include contextual mentions when you want broader discovery through descriptions, appearance roles and Letter context.
        • Combine Kind, Historicity, Species / type and Role / occupation filters, then limit “Found in” to Works, Poetry or Letters.
        • Appearances are tied to exact Textual Versions or correspondence roles, so a Character found in one draft or letter is not silently asserted to occur elsewhere.
        • The same name never proves the same identity. Howard reused names, while one developing Character may also change name between drafts.

        Appearance totals outside a completed exact-state audit report the evidence currently reviewed and are not always an exhaustive census of every surviving state. Poetry pages explicitly identify when the live Poetry audit still matches the complete current textual-state set.

        MANUSCRIPTSTypescripts and TSS numbers

        A TSS number is a catalogue reference for a physical manuscript or typescript unit. It is not a Work ID, a Textual Version ID or necessarily a draft number. Several TSS units may belong to one surviving textual witness.

        • You can enter a TSS number in Writings search to find its catalogued Work and state.
        • Exact manuscript features—such as strikeouts, insertions, page order, authorial corrections, bylines and wording changes—are recorded only when the available evidence supports them.
        • First Cuts or direct manuscript/typescript evidence can support page-level detail. An overview catalogue or spreadsheet may establish that a unit exists without proving everything written on its pages.
        SOURCESWhere the information comes from

        The catalogue began with earlier REH World Stories records and Howard Works (howardworks.com) bibliographic evidence, then reconciled those records into stable Work and Textual Version identities. Publication records and Contents are supplied through the companion REH Publications catalogue.

        Textual and Character research is expanded from reviewed source material, including:

        • Howard’s surviving manuscripts, typescripts and carbons, together with documented TSS catalogue evidence;
        • REH Foundation Press First Cuts volumes, which preserve draft and manuscript detail;
        • REH Foundation Press Ultimate Editions, used as restored reading-edition witnesses for the practical final/final-submission state;
        • original magazine, pulp and other publication texts when publication evidence is the available textual source;
        • source notes, bibliographies and other reviewed research used to reconcile titles, dates, relationships and surviving states.

        Source data is treated as evidence to be reviewed and reconciled, not as something to copy blindly. Documented manuscript holdings represented in these sources include material associated with the Glenn Lord collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University and the typescript collection at Cross Plains Library. A catalogue entry does not imply that every physical page has been directly inspected.

        Correspondence sources represented in the live Letter catalogue

        This list is generated from the retained source provenance, so it grows automatically as reviewed Letter sources are added.

        CREDITS & ACKNOWLEDGMENTSProject and research foundations

        REH Writings is created and maintained by Ståle Gismervik for reh.world. The catalogue is built on decades of bibliographic, textual, archival and editorial work by the Robert E. Howard research community.

        Major source foundations currently represented include:

        • Howard Works (howardworks.com), an important bibliographic foundation for title and publication evidence;
        • the Robert E. Howard Foundation and REH Foundation Press, including First Cuts and Ultimate Editions used in exact-text research;
        • the live Correspondence sources listed above, including The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard and every additional reviewed Letter source currently represented;
        • surviving manuscript, typescript and TSS evidence represented by material associated with the Glenn Lord collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Robert E. Howard collection at Texas A&M University and the typescript collection at Cross Plains Library;
        • original magazines, books and other primary publication witnesses;
        • the companion REH Publications catalogue on reh.world for publication records and Contents relationships.

        Individual records retain source and provenance where available. Researchers, editors, collectors and readers can be credited at the relevant source or record level when a specific contribution is known, rather than forcing every contribution into one undifferentiated master list.

        SEARCHINGUseful ways to explore
        • Try a familiar published title even when Howard used another title; reviewed title forms remain searchable.
        • Search a pseudonym or credited byline such as a publication-supplied name.
        • Search a TSS number without needing to know its Work, poem or letter title.
        • Character search is forgiving about middle initials and word order: Robert Barlow can find Robert H. Barlow.
        • Works, Poetry, Letters and Characters all support the same compact search syntax: use -word to exclude a term, for example Conan -Cimmerian, and -"exact phrase" to exclude a phrase.
        • Use quotation marks to keep a phrase together and +word when a term must be present. Keep structured questions such as Kind, Historicity and Role in the existing filters rather than building a complex Boolean query.
        • Use correspondent shortcuts for Tevis Clyde Smith, H. P. Lovecraft, Novalyne Price and other frequently represented people.
        • Combine filters: for example, a genre and year under Works, From REH plus a correspondent under Letters, or Historical / real + Letters only under Characters.
        • Open result cards for the full evidence. Compact cards deliberately summarize rather than reproduce the complete record.
        INTERPRETATIONHow evidence is treated
        • No one source is automatically best for every question. A Howard typescript may be strongest for authorial wording; a pulp proves what readers received; a restored edition may best represent the normalized final reading text.
        • Missing pages or an incomplete source cannot prove that a Character or passage was absent from the missing material.
        • A publication relationship applies to the whole Work unless the evidence identifies one exact Textual Version.
        • Stable identities are corrected conservatively: evidence is preserved, same-title and same-name records are not merged by guesswork, and uncertain points remain identified as uncertain.
        DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

        REH Writings
        changelog

        A running record of public catalogue, editorial, research and migration changes. The newest release is shown first.

        0.82.71-alphaSalvage Work prose and inline document images before /stories/ retirementCURRENT
        • Adds a guarded Legacy Work images eligible for adoption panel under Review & authority → Editorial prose & links review. It scans only inline image references on mapped legacy /stories/ pages, excludes images already present in the permanent Work gallery, and never auto-adopts anything.
        • Selected images are revalidated against the live legacy page before write, retained as gallery media with source-page provenance, and can be classified as Document / manuscript page, photograph, illustration, manuscript sketch or other image. Publication covers remain the responsibility of REH Publications.
        • Public visibility still follows the existing Work-media rights gate: permission-confirmed, public-domain and licensed items render publicly; permission-review-required items remain private until reviewed.
        • Adds an Internal migration/research wording attention filter and badge to Editorial prose review for phrases such as “legacy catalogue” and “current source packet”. The wording is not changed automatically; the normal Work editor remains the authority for the final public Introduction/Summary.
        • Adds Document / manuscript page to the permanent Work media types. No schema change; schema remains 3.13.0.
        0.82.70-alphaAdopt reviewed source prose as first-class REH Writings editorial content
        • Separates source provenance from editorial ownership for permanent Introduction/Summary rows imported from the retiring /stories/ tree.
        • An imported row may now be adopted unchanged after review: its old Story-page ID remains attached as provenance, while the existing permanent content row becomes Writings-maintained/protected without changing one character of prose.
        • Adds a bulk gate under Review & authority → Editorial prose & links review for reviewed, link-clean source copies. Up to 200 can be adopted per run with the explicit phrase ADOPT REVIEWED EDITORIAL PROSE; rows needing review or containing retiring links are excluded.
        • The everyday Work editor now labels imported-but-unadopted prose as SOURCE COPY — NOT ADOPTED and offers Adopt current wording after a Reviewed — keep decision.
        • The fast Editorial rewrite workflow changes future Keep legacy decisions into Use current wording adoption. Existing pre-0.82.70 kept_legacy decisions remain readable and are eligible for the bulk adoption gate.
        • source_legacy_post_id is never erased: it is provenance, not a marker that the permanent prose is disposable. The existing manually_edited protection bit continues to mean Writings now owns/maintains the row, even when adoption itself did not alter wording.
        • Public Work rendering and card summaries already read permanent content_sections; adopted prose therefore becomes ordinary reader-facing Work description/Introduction immediately.
        • Retires/disables the broad 0.82.69 direct-link write. Because /stories/ will be removed, cutover now preserves route mapping but does not waste effort rewriting publication/HowardWorks links inside content that will itself be deleted; only inbound links from surviving content should be cleaned later. Existing 0.82.69 rollback snapshots remain usable.
        • No Work/Text/Publication/Character identity changes. Schema remains 3.13.0.
        0.82.69-alphaReviewed direct legacy-link cutover batch
        • Adds the first guarded write phase to Legacy Link Reconciliation, based on the exact 0.82.68 dry-run plan reviewed on 6 September 2026.
        • Bundles 1,164 reviewed direct HTML storage fields / 6,202 confirmed URL occurrences: 4,431 old Story-page destinations already mapped to permanent Writings and 1,771 old Howard Works/local publication destinations already resolved by REH Publications.
        • Applies at most 250 direct fields per explicit confirmation, using only the reviewed old→new URL pairs. Every batch re-runs the live reconciliation first; changed reviewed cells or newly appearing unreviewed direct cells block the write.
        • Scope is deliberately narrow: ordinary WordPress post_content and permanent Writings editorial HTML only. Posts Table Pro/builder postmeta, options/settings, unresolved HowardWorks links, non-public publication targets and retired reading-copy links are untouched.
        • Each write batch is transactional and creates a non-autoloaded exact pre-change snapshot. The Link reconciliation screen exposes a guarded rollback for unchanged batches.
        • The reviewed plan confirms the dominant cutover pattern: most old Story links are legacy contents/cross-reference links on publication records, so this batch treats them as maintenance of already-resolved Writings/Publications identities rather than new bibliographic research.
        • Schema remains 3.13.0.
        0.82.68-alphaCutover blocker batch 1
        • Adds a reviewed, guarded cutover blocker batch based on the live 0.82.67 cutover audit.
        • The blocker reconciliation screen can restore the 8 exact editorial sections that are already marked migrate in the permanent metadata preview but are absent from permanent content. The write is transactional, preserves Work/Text/legacy-page scope, and refuses to run if any reviewed preview row has changed.
        • The same screen can preserve the 9 missing legacy reh-income values as Work-level income facts sourced to their exact legacy page. This exists to preserve public income-filter parity and provenance; it does not reinterpret the values as gross/net/agency/lifetime receipts.
        • Both actions re-run the live cutover audit immediately before writing, are idempotent, and refuse changed/mismatched rows. Neither action changes Work identity, Textual Versions, titles, genres, publications or Characters.
        • This is intended to remove two of the four current Final audit blockers: Migrated editorial coverage and Legacy filter functionality coverage. Old /stories/ links and Posts Table Pro remain separate cutover tracks.
        • Schema remains 3.13.0.
        0.82.67-alphaReviewed Work-form batch 1
        • Adds a guarded, human-confirmed Reviewed Work-form batch 1 to Catalogue health, derived from the live 0.82.66 Unclassified Work research brief.
        • The bundled review contains 75 high-confidence Work-form decisions: 32 Short story, 15 Fragment, 9 Essay, 8 Article, 4 Schoolwork, 3 Notes, 2 Novel, 1 Novella and 1 Play.
        • Decisions use only direct Work-level form statements or existing permanent form genres already accepted by the conservative Work-form policy. Generic “story” wording alone is still not treated as Short story authority.
        • Application is preflighted against the exact permanent Work ID, canonical title, active/unmerged state and current Unclassified form. Any changed/missing/conflicting row blocks the whole transaction.
        • Applying the batch changes only works.work_type and records the reviewed Work row as manually edited. Work identity, Textual Versions, titles, publication relations, Character evidence and editorial prose are untouched.
        • Schema remains 3.13.0.
        0.82.66-alphaUnclassified Work research brief
        • Adds a read-only Unclassified Work research brief download from Catalogue health and the filtered Writings catalogue.
        • Exports every remaining active Unclassified Work with permanent Work/Text IDs, exact-state labels/types, title variants, genres, bylines, Work-level editorial context, legacy migration clues, textual witnesses and current publication relationships so the 569-row metadata backlog can be researched in reviewed batches instead of hand-opened one by one.
        • The brief makes no Work-form recommendation and writes nothing. Legacy work_type_hint, source candidates and generic story buckets are explicitly retained as clues rather than authority.
        • The ordinary Work catalogue remains the Work-form authority; a later reviewed batch may update only Work form after evidence review and must not merge/split Works, move Textual Versions or change titles.
        • No schema change or install-time mutation. Schema remains 3.13.0.
        0.82.65-alphaRelease notes
        • Reconciles a missed Collected Letters authority class exposed by the Summer 2026 REH Foundation Newsletter: six independently catalogued Poetry states embedded in the two reproduced Tevis Clyde Smith Letters were present in retained TSS evidence but absent from correspondence_works.
        • Adds one guarded, transactional correction in the existing Collected Letters owner for And Dempsey Climbed Into the Ring (16 Jul 1925) plus The Dancer, Destiny?, Laughter, The Duckers of Crosses, and The Coy Maid (14 Apr 1926). Every row is anchored to the existing Letter/source key, permanent Poetry Work/Text ID and retained TSS evidence; no new Letter, Work or Textual Version is created.
        • When the already-imported Robert E. Howard Foundation Newsletter Volume 20 Number 2, Summer 2026 is uniquely identified as the facsimile Publication shared by both Letters, the same explicit action also adds any missing exact Poetry publication appearances.
        • Extends the private Newsletter bridge for future issues: a reviewed Letter facsimile now propagates only explicit active embedded_work relations with an exact Textual Version into Writings publication appearances. Separately enclosed material is deliberately not inferred.
        • No automatic mutation on installation, no Newsletter PDF storage and no schema change. Schema remains 3.13.0.
        0.82.64-alphaRelease notes
        • Adds a reviewed TSS 15331 football-roster Character census preparer to the existing Full-text & Character research workflow. The complete one-page source is declared complete/exhaustive for its 18 distinct named figures and no permanent Character data is written merely by staging it.
        • Prelinks only live identities that can be defended from the current catalogue: stable established boxing figures plus unique exact canonical targets such as Big John Clancy and Lars Olafson. Source spellings remain exact appearance evidence, and missing source-specific forms can be proposed only at the exact TSS 15331 Text scope.
        • Treats altered/planning forms conservatively. Hakon Ivarson, Jim McBane, Red Flynn, Bucko Ordstrom, Biff Brill, Spike Clarney, Monk Cleary, Butch Flanagan, Red Lynch and Jim O'Donnell are not silently merged with similar story Characters. The staged review recommends source-specific planning identities where the surviving typescript does not prove a merge.
        • The new helper resolves TSS 15331 through its existing permanent manuscript-unit authority and then stages an ordinary format-1.4 Character research package. The established identity review, new-ID creation, evidence promotion and appearance/name migration gates remain the only permanent writers.
        • No Work/Text creation, schema change, publication change, Newsletter-PDF storage or automatic Character merge. Schema remains 3.13.0.
