The story

This untitled and unfinished story fragment by Robert E. Howard features Steve Allison, Timoleon Lycurgus Casanova de Quin, and the narrator embarking on an adventurous journey into the mountains of Thibet.

The story begins with the trio’s expedition motivated by Steve’s interest in exploring ancient pueblos and Timoleon’s study of botany. Funded by the wealthy Timoleon, they travel through northern India and Nepal into Thibet. Their adventure takes a turn when their guides abandon them, leaving them stranded on a mountain in central Thibet.

Steve, exhibiting his typical resourcefulness, tries to orient themselves within the region. He deduces their location as the nomad plateau of Thibet, north of Bogtsang-tsangpo. As they strategize their next move, they realize Timoleon is missing. Upon finding him, Timoleon presents a large gold nugget he stumbled upon while examining butterflies, sparking a gold hunt.

However, their search for more gold is interrupted when they’re suddenly surrounded by ten armed tribesmen. The story ends at this cliffhanger, leaving their fate unresolved.
