“The People of the Winged Skull” is from a letter to Tevis Clyde Smith, cirka late 1928. Here is a brief extract:
At last he met two men and one said:
“They all left for England last night. I know because they told me yesterday that they were going over to England to hunt elephants.”
“No,” said the other man. “They are going to the South Pole. They left this morning at sun up and went due east. I know, because they told me yesterday that was what they were going to do.”
“You’re a damned fool,” said the first man.
“You’re a damned fool,” said the second man.
“You’re a lying son of a bitch,” said the first man, punching the second man on the nose.
“You’re a lying son of a bitch,” said the second man, punching the first man on the nose.
Hogu went on and after awhile he met a tall blond man, who gave him a cynical look.
