The Dark Man: Journal of Robert E. Howard and Pulp Studies is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal devoted to the academic study of Robert E. Howard's literary legacy as well as the literary historical and print culture contexts associated with it. The journal seeks to publish full-length articles, brief critical notes and commentaries, bibliographies, reviews of books, and other scholarship that treats Howard's life, time, literary work, and associated topics such as Weird Tales, H.P. Lovecraft, and the concept of a transhistorical pulp fiction aesthetic.

Perfect bound, wraps. ISSN 1537-0496. The issue includes Mark E. Hall’s introduction and Patrice Louinet’s study of The Isle of the Eons, followed by A1, the outline, A2, A3, B1 and B2, and Tallyho!.

Louinet distinguishes A1–A3 as successive portions of the earlier unfinished manuscript. B1 is a later rewriting; B2 supplies a replacement continuation for its closing portion. The section labels should not be taken to mean five complete independent drafts. Pictures in the Fire presents A1–A3 together as “Draft A.” Page numbers in the Contents below refer to the printed issue.
