Things to see in Cross Plains

Schedule Thursday June 9:

  • 2-4 PM: The Robert E. Howard Museum is open to the public. There are no docents on duty. The Gift Shop is open and the grounds and Pavilion are available to all.
  • 5-7 pm: Fish Fry at the Cross Plains Senior Center
  • We are invited to Paul Herman, Thursday afternoon. Grill and smoker working. Bring whatever we want to drink.

Schedule Friday June 10:

  • 8:30 am until gone: Coffee and donuts in the Pavilion9 am – 4 pm: Robert E. Howard Museum and grounds open to the public. The adjacent Alla Ray Morris Pavilion will be open all day until late night.
  • 9 am – 4 pm: REH Postal Cancellation Souvenir at Cross Plains Post Office. FRIDAY ONLY.
  • NOTE: the Cross Plains P.O. is CLOSED for lunch between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm.
  • 9 – 11 am: BUS TOUR of Cross Plains & surrounding areas. FRIDAY ONLY.
  • 10 am – 4 pm: REH Foundation Press canopy and Dealer’s Area open on grounds east of Museum.
  • 10 am – 4 pm: Cross Plains Public Library open. Original Robert E. Howard typescripts along with original Weird Tales magazines and other Howard items on display.
  • 11am – Noon: PANEL: The REH Influence on Gaming. A history and overview of the many forms of games initiated by the words of REH. Panelists: Mark Finn, Fred Malmberg, Jason Ray Carney, Bill Cavalier + others. AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.
  • NOON: Hot Dog Lunch in the Pavilion. Hosted by Project Pride. There will be cake to celebrate Conan’s birthday!
  • 1 – 2 pm: PANEL: Robert E. Howard in 1932. A discussion of the 90th Anniversaries of Conan, Worms of the Earth, the poem “Cimmeria” plus other notable REH events in ’32. Panelists: Patrice Louinet, Rusty Burke, Bobby Dee, Deuce Richardson + others. AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.
  • 2:05 – 3:05 PANEL: The Glenn Lord Symposium. Jason Ray Carney, Moderator. Three 20 minute papers will be presented. Panelists; Dierk Guenther, Nicole Emmelhainz, James McGlothlin.
  • 3:10: Presentation of the 2022 REH Foundation Awards. Rusty Burke, Bill Cavalier.
  • 5:30 – 6:30 Silent Auction items available for viewing & bidding at Banquet site.
  • 6:30: The Robert E. Howard Celebration Banquet & Silent Auction at the Family Life Center of the Baptist Church on Main Street. Guest of Honor Speaker: Fred Malmberg.
  • 9 pm PANEL: Fists at the Ice House. Our perennial favorite presentation about Howard’s most prolific writings, his boxing stories. Presented behind the Ice House on Main Street (next to Subway) on the concrete slab where Howard actually boxed!
  • There is ongoing Howard Fellowship at the Pavilion.

Schedule Saturday June 12:

  • 9 am – 4 pm: Robert E. Howard Museum and grounds open to the public. The adjacent Alla Ray Morris Pavilion will be open all day until late night.
  • 9 – 10:45 am: WALKING TOUR of downtown Cross Plains, conducted by Rusty Burke. Meet at the Ice House on Main Street and walk in the steps of Bob Howard.
  • 10 am – 3 pm: REH Foundation Press canopy and Dealer’s Area open on grounds east of Museum.
  • 10 am – 4 pm: Cross Plains Public Library open. Original Robert E. Howard typescripts along with original Weird Tales magazines and other Howard items on display.
  • 11 am – Noon PANEL: Adapting REH to the Gaming World. A discussion of writing, illustrating, publishing and what it takes to translate REH’s writing into Role-playing, table top and electronic games. AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.
  • 1:05 – 2:05: PANEL TO BE DETERMINED.
  • 2:10 – 3 pm: PANEL: What’s Up with REH? This is our wrap-up panel, devoted to the latest news of Howard publishing, entertainment and how his influence continues. Panelists: Paul Herman, Fred Malmberg, Jay Zetterberg, Steve Saffel + others. AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.
  • 4 pm: Tour of Museum Grounds. Rusty Burke will give a tour of the grounds where Howard lived.
  • 5 pm: Sunset Barbeque at the Pavilion. Donated by Jack and Barbara Baum. Come and enjoy real Texas BBQ! This is a fundraiser for the Cross Plains Public Library, so donations are welcomed!
  • After the BBQ: Porchlight Poetry. Listen to multi-language readings of Howard’s “Cimmeria” and celebrate its 90th Anniversary! This is an open mic event and all are encouraged to read Robert E. Howard poetry.
  • REH Fellowship in the Pavilion will continue.
