The Origins of Fantasy - Robert E. Howard

The archetypal fantasy hero, Conan the Barbarian tries to survive in a world where violence and sex are the rule. John Howe continues his American journey to Cross Plain, Texas, the village where its creator, Robert E. Howard, lived. He discovers a muscular hero who is much more complex than he thought.

The illustrator also met the artist Barry Windsor-Smith. Who, claiming to be Howard, was the first to transpose Conan into a comic book for Marvel.

Produced by Stéphan Roelants in 2021 by Arte.TV.

This clip was not available outside of France. I have translated the dialogue (from what I could comprehend and by use of AI tools). It’s not perfect, but at least most of it is now understandable to English reading viewers.

Duration: 27 minutes.
